seatkid Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 Any comments as to whether diesel will become more expensive relative to petrol? I recently noticed my local Sainsbury's seemed to suffer shortages of diesel. An increasing proportion of new cars are diesel and my schoolday recollection of the refinery process leads me to think that its easier to make more petrol rather than more diesel. Quote
HJT Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 Down to my local chippie it is then, to purchase their used oil :( :( howard Quote
Guest MATT Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 Ill be buying some WD40 for my bike chain, me thinks. MATT Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 The oil industry says it fluctuates in 10-15 year cycles. We are 5 years into this one, and in the past 3 years fuel has increased by 20 pence (30p in the past 5 years) So we can expect it (as history shows) to cost about 30 pence more than now before falling again - in 5-10 years time. So 2010 might bring us Quote
seatkid Posted August 9, 2005 Author Report Posted August 9, 2005 So the majority of you are resigned to Quote
Guest stawarz Posted August 9, 2005 Report Posted August 9, 2005 Back the SeatKid's first comment, desiel availability and factory gate pricing is also a function of heating oil demand (similar distillation cut). So when it's cold in the US desiel prices go up and availability down..... Quote
seatkid Posted September 4, 2005 Author Report Posted September 4, 2005 From the times..Industry sources estimate that up to 70% of the country Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Texaco in Maidstone, Kent - 99.9p and diesel 98.9p Yet the supermarket is only chraging 91.9 down the road........ Quote
Guest MATT Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 morrison's up the road from me, are charging 96.9p for diesel (if i remember correctly) but the privately owned garage up the road, is charging around Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 There was an "industry" bloke on Radio 4 this morning saying that he expected prices to drop a few pence per litre in a couple of weeks, as the "extra" demand by people on holiday subsides. Should I check outside my window for a flying pig? Quote
golfmadman Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 There was a guy on Radio 5 on friday tea time who was saying that he expected prices to continually increase over a long period, he was talking years, particularly with the Hurricane and its devastation of the oil refineries in the gulf of Mexico. Goods new though, he did say that as they would be making a fortune out of us :( it would spark more companies to research new Oil fields in an attempt to jump on the gravy crude train and in about 5 years there would be a glut of fuel available and prices would come down. I cant wait !! Quote
sexysi Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 As long as LPG stays at 42.9p per litre. I don't mindsexysi Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2005 Author Report Posted September 5, 2005 At our Morrisons it's still 32.9p/litre! Would get my 1.2 Fabia converted except there's no official conversion, and the industry gives the impression its full of cowboys and bodge artists. Not to mention insurance.... Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2005 Author Report Posted September 5, 2005 read this today on HJ This morning on radio 4 financial report it was stated by some expert that petrol prices should start to ease back before rising a little at christmas but the diesel price would go through the roof ,this is also confirmed by the futures on the energy desk this morning at work a 60% increase over the next few months seems to be the figure. It seems highly unlikely that gas oil prices will ease at all in the coming years making the running of oil fired boilers and diesel cars cost prohibitive. Bear in mind that 80% of HJ posts are a load of rubbish... the original intention of this thread was to judge whether I should go for a diesel or petrol replacement for the old VW Golf rustbucket. I fancy a second Fabia (for the kiddies) but with the cost of fuel sky rocketing, is the one to go for a petrol 1.2 (ave 45 mpg) or a 1.4 PD (ave 60+mpg but Quote

sexysi Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Well I'm from Bexleyheath in Kent, just South of London. It seems to be a bit of a trek to fill up in Yorkshire everyday. Just goes to show there still is a North/South divide. Even on petrol prices <_< sexysi Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2005 Author Report Posted September 5, 2005 You mean LPG.....I guess they probably change the price when the tanks are refilled and LPG isnt popular here so old stock, old prices.... Quote
Guest tonycoates Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 it would spark more companies to research new Oil fields At last the oil fields around the Falkland islands that we faught to protect, can be viable. Quote
gregers Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 i thought the ones in the north sea would be as viable as anything but we seem to export most of it and import the more expensive stuff <_ but hey if i knew anything about politics wouldnt be attending parliment now would> Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2005 Author Report Posted September 5, 2005 read today on BBCif one is lucky enough to live near Bristol, the ASDA and Morrison outlets on Cribbs Causeway only charge 28.9 ppl. [for LPG] Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 You mean LPG.....I guess they probably change the price when the tanks are refilled and LPG isnt popular here so old stock, old prices.... So does that mean as the petrol in their tanks was delivered last week before the latest price hike its cheaper still? I dont think so! if that was the case the reserve stocks the yanks are about dip[ into should infact cause a big drop in the price due to it being old stock :) Quote
seatkid Posted September 6, 2005 Author Report Posted September 6, 2005 Sometimes I just don't know if youre pulling my .......... B) What I meant was, I think stations recalculate their price everytime they take a delivery based on what the supplier has charged them for that load. SO, in BRISTOL and S Yorks. where hardly anyone uses LPG, the price has stuck because the last delivery was probably in 1998...... :P :) Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Sometimes I just don't know if youre pulling my .......... :D Er! LEG! :P what else had you mind? :) I'm friendly enough but not that friendly B) Quote
Andrew T Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Just been looking through my fuel log and found a year ago Petrol was 79.9/ litre. In June 2003 it was only 69.9.Ten years ago I went out to work in the Middle East and people there were moaning that the cost of fuel had just doubled - from 4p to 8p a litre! Oh happy days, fill your tank and have change out of a fiver, no income tax.... Quote
seatkid Posted September 8, 2005 Author Report Posted September 8, 2005 HEY! Just found a great way to get cheap fuel I wonder what the difference is in the different diesel types? Though at these prices I might be tempted to try their biofuel  Quote
